Shoe care

A few recommendations on how to keep your shoes in great shape:

A handmade pair of ET AL shoes, boots or sneakers are more like a bespoke car, a quality watch or an artwork, rather than a simple item of clothing. It is very important to us that you know how best to look after and cherish your footwear, so that they can serve you well for years to come.

  1. Try to wear your shoes, boots and sneakers in dry contitions for the first few occassions. Avoid getting your shoes extremely wet, should this occur allow your shoes to dry naturally on shoe trees and lay the shoes on their sides rather than on their soles. Never use direct heat.
  2. Always use a shoe horn when putting on your shoes whether they are slip-ons, buckled or lace-ups, otherwise the back of the shoe will be weakened.
  3. It is highly recommended to use shoe trees after each wearing to maintain the shape of the shoe and help them dry out.
  4. It is also recommended to wipe the shoes down and clean them thoroughly (apply a quality spray, cream or wax polish all depending on material) to feed the leather and prevent cracking, even if the shoes do not appear to have lost any of their original characteristics.

Polido footwear:

Polido leather is a waterproof leather, covered with patent giving the shiny character of the material. This type of leather requires very little care.

The best way to keep our polido footwear clean and shiny, is to frequently polish them with the cloth enclosed in our shoe box.

Full grain & aniline footwear:

Full grain and aniline leather are both precious, natural materials with exceptional properties, subject to a natural aging process that adds extra character to the product if well maintained.

Very dirty full grain and aniline shoes should be cleaned with a brush and warm water. They must be left to dry thoroughly, far from direct sources of heat, which could create tears due to skin shrinkage.

Periodic spray with a protective/waterproof product, prevents the absorption of water and dirt into full-grain leather.

When not in use, leather shoes should preferably be stored in a dry and well-ventilated area with a wooden shoe-trees. Never store shoes that are still wet, in damp or wet places or inside cars, as they could be attacked by molds!

Even the leather lining, from time to time, should be treated with a specific lotion. This treatment prevents the salts and minerals contained in the sweat of the feet from drying the lining, with the consequence of making it fragile and hard.

Suede & nubuck footwear:

Nubuck and suede are unique types of leather. However, both materials also require more maintenance so that they continue to look great.

Dirt can be removed using a small fine wire brush. You could also use simple hand soap on a washcloth or sponge. After washing, your must allow your shoes to air dry without using a heat source that could cause leather to stiffen and shrink. After cleaning, we recommend that you brush your shoes, boots or sneakers with a nubuck/suede stiff brush.

Ideally, it is best to spray your suede or nubuch shoes with waterproof spray that is not silicone based before use.

EVA & T/R outsoles:

All our soles are made of either lightweight EVA or T/R. They are easy to keep as most spots and stains are removed with water and soap. More persistent stains or dirt, can also be removed by applying a small amount of acetone to a piece of cotton wool and gently rubbed away.

We strongly recommend that you clean the outsoles once a months for both a much sharper look and to maintain the key characteristics of comfort and durability that applies to all of the outsoles we use in ET AL.
